Wonder Woman w/o Powers Pt. 34: Wonder Woman #204

It’s a day like any other day in Fun City… One of its unsung, unknown, faceless millions is starting to work early…

In an assault of sniper fire that kills several people, I Ching is mortally wounded…

After a vicious struggle with the sniper, Diana falls off the roof and lands unconscious on the back of one of its gargoyles. She wakes up in the hospital with no memory…

Shortly, the nurse finds her missing and we learn she has hijacked a supersonic plane, repeating quietly to herself, “I’ve got to get back! I’ve got to get back!” When her plane is shot down and crashes into the ocean, she has an encounter with…

She’s of course rescued by a boatload of Amazons and taken to her mother, Queen Hippolyta. With her total loss of memory, there’s only one chance to restore it: the Amazon memory bank. (Hippolyta doesn’t want all memories restored, though; she doesn’t want Diana to know her “secret.”)

We revisit her origin and learn that the memory bank worked! Diana's time as a superhero without powers disappears. After a battle with an armored woman who claims there can be only one Wonder Woman ends in a draw, the Amazons deliver Diana to New York City. She says…

Fate left me off at the U.N. building! I wonder why?

Ah, how easy it is to rewrite history in a comic book! If something doesn’t work, just say that it never happened. As critical as that sounds, this is a good way to return Wonder Woman to her former glory. The story ends with the thought that anything is now possible. But will The “original” character be as stale as she supposedly was before her modern revamp? That’s a story for another day…

Next: The Freedom Fighters!
